Less than 5% of Fortune 500 Companies with Women CEOs
WOW- less than 4.8 percent Fortune 500 companies run by women CEOs!
It is 2018 and I am baffled that with Indra Nooyi’s departure soon from Pepsi, that only 4.5% of Fortune 500 companies will be run by women CEO’s. This is unacceptably dismal. We have not come far at all. Only 23 out of 500. This is after decades of attention and scrutiny over this topic.
Now- also remember that we (women) make up 50% of the workforce. How could you be half the workforce but less than 5% of the leadership?
There are so many problems to highlight I don’t know which one to bring up. But let me point out just a few of the alarming consequences of this sad statistic:
- Leads to extreme lack of overall diversity in companies
- Leads to extreme lack of female creativity and perspective in such companies
- Leads to an in ability to recruit female talent overall
- Highly uninspiring to women entering such companies
- Leads to highly male boards of directors
- Creates a toxic and unnatural organization in startups who also have almost no women
I am so alarmed about all of this that I am in the midst of finishing my manuscript for my book addressing the elements and reasons that this is happening. We need to fix the root cause else in 10 years are we looking at ZERO PERCENT women leading fortune 500 companies. We need to celebrate ourselves (women) less and realize that we need to head on solve this problem. Women organizations and annual gatherings frankly have not worked and will not work. Stay tuned as we change the landscape of the world together. As soon as my manuscript hits the publishers I will share the details with you.
